Everything Behind

Television Station: Showtime Studio

Last September 17, 2011, our group decided to hold our studio tour in ABS-CBN particularly in Showtime.  As I look back and remember that day, I still feel the excitement I had. That was my first time to actually be in a TV station building and my first time as well to be in a TV studio as part of the live audience. We arrived at ABS-CBN’s audience entrance at around 8 o’clock in the morning and lined up there. We were asked to make a poster that specifies from what school we were from. We also had the chance to vote who the “burado” will be. There, we also took pictures of ourselves together with our showtime contestants to shorten the time of waiting. Guards and marshalls roamed around the waiting area to assist us, Showtimers. They also gave guidelines of what to do as soon as we are inside (and that includes waving and smiling to the camera).

It's Shotime, Group Six! :)

When we were already asked to enter, even more excitement grew inside of me. I was really stunned as I saw the people handling the equipments and machines used for the show. They looked very professional. That is, then, the exact time when I said to myself that I want to be just like them.

We entered the studio of showtime. We were already entertained when Mel Feliciano and his assistant grabbed the microphone and started cracking jokes. They also taught us dance steps to the songs that will be played during the show itself.

The show began. We were all anxious to be seen in the cameras; but more than that, we were all very anxious to be have our pictures taken with some of the famous personalities there like Vhong Navarro, Billy Crawford, Jugs and Teddy and etc.

Our trip in the TV station gave me a more vivid idea of what my future will be if I decide to pursue Broadcast Journalism. Everything that I saw was very technical that scared me a bit. Although it was very tiring and the people there, starting from the guards to the hosts, were not warm and were very strict, I still enjoyed the trip.
                                                                                                          Frequency Modulation Station: Love Radio

September 21, 2011, Wednesday, is the day we went to the FM Station 90.2, Love Radio. There, as Sir James, the HR officer of MBC, assisted us, we met Miss Thea, commonly known as "Missyhista". I have learned lots in the tour. I have even been encouraged to have my On-the-job training there. I have learned that the broadcasters of Love Radio do not constantly change. One slot will only be be replaced once a broadcaster resigns. I have also learned that they did not have holidays except for Holy Week. I felt very privileged to have been given the chance to speak with those warm people in the Manila Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). Now, I have learned to give more attention to radios after knowing that much effort from good brains made those programs possible.

Out of all the station visits that I have encountered, this one's the best. We went here last Friday, September 23, 2011. The people in the station were very nice and they have taught us a lot. This experience with GMA, since I am not a Kapuso, triggered me to give this station a chance; because it, really, is another station we should never miss. The radio station of DZBB is very fast. They have showed us how they gather information and disseminate it to the people. This is a very crucial station since people in this field gather the best facts possible. As a matter of fact, the writers even told us that they always get filed with cases of libel and even receive death threats.

The studio tours, as a whole, was not only loads of fun but also very informative. I know I will go back soon to those places and I wish, when that time comes, I already have the knowledge to be more aware of EVERYTHING BEHIND this beautiful shows and programs that we call art.

Radio and TV station experience

Going to a radio and TV station was something I will not forget for the rest of my student life. It’s fulfilling to know how different a radio from TV. It was my first time to observe thorough in a TV station though it was not my first time to go to a TV station, before it was all about the actors that I wanted to see to take pictures with them. It’s a different experience when we visited ABS-CBN and GMA, I really observe how things are produced from TV and radio.

We first visited ABS-CBN for one of their shows “Showtime” it was fun and learning experience. We arrived at ABS-CBN at exactly 8am, we entered the audience entrance. We waited for about one and a half hour before we entered the studio. The event marshals gave tips and guidelines in case of emergency. Before the show starts we practiced some dance steps for the opening of the show and it was tiring. For me it’s kind of a scripted when they asked us to always smile and we should have a lot of energy all throughout the show and it was not easy because it’s tiring for me. We were not allowed to use cellphones inside. The event marshals were really strict during commercials we were not allowed to take pictures with the hosts and judges of the show, unless you are fast and ambush them with pictures.

Radio on the other hand was simpler of course they cannot be seen through television for the FM stations. AM stations are more about public service and news. We visited DZBB of GMA, when we got there it was kuya Germs or Herman Moreno who was the anchor. He was so accommodating he even gave us ‘empanada’ his merienda and told us to come back next week for the taping his show “walang tulugan”. Before we left the office the writers of imbestigador radio team invited us to their office for a quick chat that lasted for an hour. They were great they trusted us so much that they even gave us their numbers. FM stations are entertaining we visited couple of FM stations like; YES FM 101.1, LOVE RADIO 90.1, and EASY ROCK 96.3. We met the famous couple of the DJs as well.

Having a heart, passion and a calling for public service are the keys to stay on the field of media. If you do not love what you do you’ll end up quitting because media work is not easy. You will receive threats, you can be arrested, and worse you could die. There’s always hardship and success will follow. If I would work for radio or TV I’d say both. For radio I want to be a DJ and for TV either producer or director.

Pieces of what you called ART

If I would put a name to this artwork I will name it “ironic”. I like this art work so much because it’s so transparent and very easy to understand. The moment I lay my eyes on it I know already what the story of this painting. It makes me feel sad that the clowns we know also have bad times that they can be also sad it’s not always good times or joke times.

Using this painting as an inspiration for a movie my story will be a man who is always happy with his life and contented with everything he has. He never wanted anything else but to be happy. Suddenly one morning he woke up and he was dressed as a clown. He was shocked and he kept on erasing the make-up and kept changing his clothes but it kept on returning as a clown. Having no choice he became a clown and it became his career. He did not enjoy being a clown he cursed what happened to him and kept on asking GOD why it happened. He was so angry at GOD for punishing him as a clown. He met an accident woke up with GOD and realized he was dead then he asked GOD why did he punish him being a clown. Then GOD took him to see the past as a flashback and to answer his question. And all of sudden it came to realization that after all his happiness it was all fake that he was not really happy and not contented with what he has. Simply because he wanted others to feel bad when he was happy to brag that he has no problem at all, it’s all because he never had a real family because he was adopted and did not treat by his foster family right. GOD wants him to realize by being a clown that no matter the problem was you can never be too sad for others like clowns no matter hardship they’ve been experiencing they will not show it for the sake of the others because it’s their job to make others happy.

“The forbidden love” is the name I would like for this painting. I like this painting so much because it is well presented, easy for me to understand. It makes me feel excited to feel love. And I wonder if “forbidden love” really exists.

My story for this painting as an inspiration in a movie would be two people from different world that have fallen in love and that is forbidden love. The girl has a third eye but doesn’t know that she has. she met this guy that she fell in love at first sight. They kept on seeing each other accidentally but they are not talking whenever they see each other as if seeing a ghost. Farah wonders if Raju could see her also, because she thinks Raju is not interested in her. Farah was bothered because Raju was very familiar to her and wanted to ask if they know each other. A few weeks have passed Farah went to the hospital for a check-up he saw Raju again and she had the guts to ask him. In instant they clicked and became friends to lovers. They were so happy, she wanted for her family to meet Raju but due to unfortunate situations her family never had the chance to meet him. A year after December 24, 2012 the family asked her to go to a funeral, when she looked at the coffin it was Raju she cried and confused because Raju was with her when she arrived at the funeral. Then her family explained, that on December 24, 2011 Raju and Farah was on a trip for Christmas to visit Farah’s family for the first time and for Farah to finally introduce Raju and announced their engagement but it never happened because of an accident. Raju was comatose for a year and died exactly a year after they had an accident. Farah had amnesia and because of her third eye she can see Raju without knowing it was her boyfriend before and that they really know each other. A few days after Raju’s death Farah wanted to take her life because Raju wanted her to be with him so she did kill herself and not ending up with him because it was suicide.

Caloy Gabuco: The Talented Man That He Is

There are exactly two reasons why this painting caught my eyes. First, it is the delicate look in the face of the lady. That look is very exquisite. The background also reacts accordingly to that lovely look. Her eyes have given an extra trace of mystery to the painting. Although the strokes are not very clear and the face appears a little blurred, her face is still emphasized. Her face exhibits an extraordinary look that defies all worries. Second, I like Caloy Gabuco‘s choice of colors. It seems very feminine that matches the look upon her face. Although she appears very fragile to me, she also seems smart and very independent with the way she is positioned in the balcony holding a musical instrument. She emerges as human possessing angel-like characteristics. Had I been given the talent in painting, I’d wish I was the one who painted her.

If I am to make a movie inspired by this painting, I’d do a film that is about a beautiful lady named Esperanza. More than anything in the world, she loves music. She is also a performer in a theatre. In one of her performances, a man named Antonio goes up to him and introduces himself. It is like love at first sight for both of them. They, then, start being together. Few years pass, and they decide to prepare for their own wedding. A month before the wedding, while Esperanza is at home, she receives an alarming phone call. She rushes to the hospital and sees the body of Antonio... cold and dead. As it turns out, he meets an accident while picking up the invitations for their wedding. No tear pours from her. She walks from the hospital to the house that is supposedly their house after they get married. As she smells the scent of Antonio, she loudly weeps in sadness and spends her night on that house, alone and crying. After the funeral, the people sees her everyday by her balcony sitting with her instrument waiting for that day to come that they will see each other again.

The Heart is a Dreadful Place to Live In

My eyes stared in awe as I saw this piece of art. “How much talent can there be on Dave Lock?” I wondered. The painting revealed itself to me as an authentic manifestation of what the heart can do to anyone. Suppressed feelings may damage one’s heart... or one’s heart may damage those suppressed feelings. Yes, dreadful. The splats of orange and yellow gave a dash of verve to the bigger picture of the unhappy face behind it. Those eyes appeared to me as if it was telling me that there is a mystery behind it. They do not uprightly say what it really conveys. However, they have told lots to me – curiosity, fear, disappointment, disgust, and hatred. This double-mouthed creature says a lot about its title: The Heart is a Dreadful Place to Live In; many words are uttered, yet no words explained a single thought. The strong colours of black, orange, and yellow have mixed so harmoniously that no colour overpowered the other. It struck me more because there in the midst of the picture is a withered rose that continually triggers me to ask why. This painting has got me thinking of more questions; and none of it has yet to be answered. That, I think, is how an artist becomes very effective – when he produces thought provoking and independent works.

If I would direct a film drawing inspiration from the painting, it would be about an orphan named Fernando who, as an infant, was abandoned by his parents during the war. The kid is very witty and is oblivious of other things. He is very philosophical and he always outsmarts everyone that comes his way. He acquires knowledge from books in the mini library in front of the orphanage where he lives. He would always sneak out from the orphanage to get to that mini library. However, even with enough knowledge, he still knows that something is missing. When he grows old, he, then, decides to leave the orphanage and explore the rest of the world for the first time in search of that empty piece. He, then, arrives to a little town called Sola and encounters hoodlums. The hoodlums beat him for being in their territory. During the morning of the next day, he finds himself in a small, native house where he is being nursed by an old woman in the name of Christina Maria. She offers him to stay. Unfortunately, Fernando refuses. The old woman insisted more through a condition: If Fernando stays, she will give her something that’ll live for eternity; if he leaves, he’ll miss that chance. Fernando gets curious and finally accepts. Of course, the lady, tricky as she is, did not give that thing to him yet. The next days are a beauty for them both. In the process, he begins to have strange feelings already. Little does he know that he already knows how it is to feel. Years pass and Christina Maria is already dying. Fernando, then, unexplainably pours tears. As Christina Maria breathes her last, he realizes that the old woman gave him an eternal gift that he has been ignoring – to feel, that is. How dreadful it is to live in the heart. She dies and he weeps.

Visit to Radio and Television Stations

It was not really my first time to visit a live TV program, I used to visit GMA because my father’s friend work there as the head writer of comedy shows like bubble gang, etc. However, this experience in ABS CBN Showtime was really fun and exciting unlike the other programs I have already visited. Probably because it was my first time to experience watching a live show as an audience. I had a great time participating in the show even though some people especially the guards were strict. They even choreographed our dance moves. The hosts seem nice except for some who looked utterly arrogant. I was quite disappointed because not all the hosts of the show were there like Anne Curtis and Kuya Kim. I was amazed how this live TV program is produced. The media people were very good in what they do. They signal the hosts about the time and guide them when to proceed to a particular action, like for instance, to advance in commenting. They also provide them guides or scripts using a manila paper. Several cameramen were also needed in order for the one directing the show to present variety of angle shots to the viewers which I think is quite complicated.

Script being read by Vhong Navarro.

A signal to Vice Ganda.

We got the chance to take pictures with one of the host, Billy Crawford.

Live television programs are difficult because of the fact that it is live; mistakes should not be committed not just by hosts or actors/actress but also of all the production crew, technical crew, and other media people. Discipline, alertness, and focus are needed in this field.

Mr. German Moreno

Missyhista
It was my first time to visit radio stations and I imagined their work as less stressful than in television stations. When I witnessed and interviewed some of the people working there I realized that the degree of pressure was somehow similar to those working in the television stations for the reason that even though there are no visual mediums the challenge is how to make people visualize through words so as to make the announcement or news effective. Words are carefully chosen and how these people talk is more exaggerated than usual. I had fun visiting both love radio and DZBB. I was amazed with missyhista, in love radio, when we witnessed how she does her work. I was astonished with how her personality suddenly changed upon going on air. She talked normal and her voice was not really that loud when she answered our questions but when she got on air she changed. She spontaneously delivered all those words on air after she talked to us. We surrounded her while she was doing her work. I was speechless on how multitasking and professional she can be.

with writers Julianne Fabic, Nico Irasare, and Andy Penafuerte
On the other hand, during our visit in DZBB plenty of people were really polite to us. We got the chance to talk to four (4) writers of the DZBB since it was their free time. In comparison to the fm station that we visited, this am station was experiencing a lot of stress based on the descriptions and explanations of the writers that we talked to. I felt at ease and curios as we were lectured on how news is broadcasted. At ease because of the politeness and generosity of the people around. We were given chicken empanadas and burgers. And curios on how the whole thing take place even though they have answered all of our questions. I had fun talking with them; they were really nice and humorous people.

The insights I have gained in this radio tour was that people working in this broadcast media should be fast learners and multitasking. They should also possess the knowledge in this field and spontaneity in broadcasting. News must be relative and useful for the public. Words or terms used must be carefully examined.

Mr. Joel Reyes Zobel

I would consider working in television because of the challenge and enhancement of skills that may be obtained upon working in such. Also, immediate feedback can be acquired in television knowing that it is the number one (1) medium in the country.  The advantage of having an immediate feedback is that one’s work is instantaneously criticized thus opening the chance for improvement of one’s skill. I think I would choose to work as a newscaster because I am fond of public speaking although my skills are not yet as proficient as professionals like Jessica Soho, Mike Enriquez, and others. I believe that practice and experience would further enhance my skills.

Manila Art 2011

I like this artwork because of its light delicate strokes, choice of color, and setting.   In my opinion, the picture suggests an old traditional Spanish era setting. This is a picture of a fragile, delicate, and skillful woman. The tints of red and the strokes of white made me think she is fragile and delicate while the musical instrument suggests that she is talented. The cup of maybe a tea or coffee also made me conclude that she is practicing her skill in playing this particular string instrument. I am not sure though if it is a cello or a double bass. I believe that despite her superficial fragile, feminine look she is on the inside independent and strong. This painting makes me feel calm and motivated. Calm for the reason that the setting was in a balcony surrounded by roses and plants. It is like a place where I would go whenever I want to be alone to reflect and to relax. I also felt motivated because the picture somehow suggests women empowerment. Besides the physical feminine attributes of the woman the instrument highlights the inner characteristics of the woman. A professor once told me that musicians are clever and that most of them are good in mathematics. Ergo, she is a beautiful image of what women ought to be that is not just beauty but also brains.

If I were to make a film using this painting as an inspiration it would be a love story about a woman named Ambriel who not only possesses the characteristics of a kind-hearted, God-fearing, patient, loving, humble and talented person but also the striking beauty of a delicate angel.  On the other hand, a man named Jace who is the opposite of everything that she is; the typical good looking, hot blazing body, playboy, conceited, and overconfident guy who is the cause of heartbreaks of seldom girls is bound to become her better half.  They met at the wedding where she is the bridesmaid and he is the groomsman. He became interested to her because he was surprised his charms did not work and was impressed when she played a double base at the reception. He wanted to get to know her only to find out that she already have a boyfriend. The reception was held in a hotel near the beach. Right after the reception, there was some sort of group bonding between the bride and the groom’s friends near the shore. They were able to spend the night getting to know each other after everybody left.  Few weeks pass they meet again in a dinner date that was set-up by, Dana, her cousin who happens to be the current girlfriend of Jace.  They were both surprised to see each other especially Jace who did not have a single idea that Ambriel was Dana’s cousin. An angry woman approached them and introduced herself as the girlfriend of Cam, Ambriel’s boyfriend. Upset, Ambriel walked out and was followed by Jace and Dana. Jace now faces a dilemma on how to break up with her girlfriend when she is the cousin of the woman that he really wanted to be with.

I am also fond of this painting because of its nakedness. I love how the red petals were accentuated having the mixture of black and white as its receding background.  The paleness of the woman’s skin suggests innocence however the butterfly tattoo on the upper back, red lips and white corset dress contradicts the latter. When I first looked at this painting it made me feel sad for the reason that the woman’s expression showed grimace and her posing was quite stiff which made me think that she has problems and did not really want men to see her as an object of desire for lust.

If I were to make a film using this painting as an inspiration it would be about social problems where exploitation is the main idea. The story revolves around a girl named Cherry who was born in an underprivileged family. Luckily, she was able finish high school because of scholarship grant by the government but struggling to finish college. Her parents can no longer provide for her studies because she has three (3) siblings who are still in grade school and two (2) other in high school. It has always been her dream to become a doctor. Her frustration had driven her to try every means possible in order to support her studies. Desperate, she allowed a woman she acquainted with to pimp her out and ended up working in a strip club. She goes to school in the morning and works at night. Never in her life had she expected for this to happen, however, she thinks that she has no other choice (she think of it as her last resort) but to work as a prostitute if she is to attain her main goal which is to graduate with doctorate degree. A boy named Daniel made her want to get out of this situation. Daniel came from a wealthy yet humble family. He is compassionate and God-fearing. He is her schoolmate and they eventually developed feelings for each other. Because of Daniel’s background she finds it hard to tell him the whole truth about her. She is afraid he would not accept her. Confused, she has to choose between love and her most aspired dream.
