Mainstream movies are known for their patterned and predictable stories wherein the product would always result to a happy ending due to some expected instances. These movies are always fed to the public for the reason that most people in the Philippine film industry perceives that several Filipino spectators are not educated enough to comprehend the creative films made by talented and professional directors. They believe that these people would not enjoy watching films that are not based on the formula films. Furthermore, these formula films are said to be created because of commercial reasons. They are making money. On the other hand, there are also directors who feel that there is more to films than just having to show people these redundant films. These are the directors who make films not just for business but also to exercise the fun to express.
Independent Cinema opens innovative film making which helps directors enhance their talents and skills. It gives opportunities to aspiring and amateur directors, actors, producers, script writers and the like. It offers directors the chance to express their own style and concept of directing without being controlled by companies. It paves the way towards new creations and new ways of thinking.
An advantage in making indie films is that it does not need so much money. They do not need to hire famous artists for it and utilize expensive machinery and gadgets to produce the film. In fact, they do not also need that much money for the salary of those who are behind the film they are making.
Another advantage of Indie films is that no company controls them. Only them decides on how the scenes are going to turn out. So, more open-minded concepts may be used. For instance, independent films show explicit scenes that do not need to be censored or edited. It is freer than the mainstream. Consequently, the audience’s attention is being captured can the film can easily depict the story that they want to - no restrictions. Due to this, the film retains its essence.

One advantage of Independent films over any other commercial film, again, is, perhaps, the good image it sets to itself. For example, even if an Indie film portrays an obscene situation in the film, they will not be criticized that much for it; because they are independent films. People are already used to that because they have already set the idea that Independent films are really like that.
Because of these advantages, people are given options and new ideas which in turn could expand their definition of a good film. It heightens the society’s awareness, given that most of these films portray the Filipino society. It could also help the Philippine film industry develop and become globally competitive. As a suggestion, let us save our dying Filipino film Industry. Let us, then, create a new industry that will be all about success rather than just business.
